Workshop: Molecular Mechanisms in Neurodegeneration: From Molecule to Cures, Sesimbra, 15 - 21 July
Coordinators: Tiago Fleming (IMM), Aleksey Kazantsev (HMS), Ana Cristina Rego (CNC), Cecília Rodrigues (FFUL)
Date: 15th to 21st July 2010
Location: Hotel do Mar, Rua General Humberto Delgado, 10, 2970-628 SESIMBRA
Deadline for Registration: 11 June 2010
Description:
Neurodegeneration represents one of the most devastating causes of human suffering, not only for patients but also for their families. However, currently available therapeutics act mainly on symptomatic relief, not treating the underlying conditions. This scenario urges for development of new efficient approaches and for the identification of novel targets for intervention. Herein, we propose the topic "Molecular Mechanisms in Neurodegeneration: From Molecules to Cures". This initiative aims to: 1) encourage an informal and relaxed exchange of ideas between senior scientists and participants, and 2) promote rewarding collaborative interactions that will continue in future scientific endeavours. Furthermore, we propose to focus on novel techniques and methods used for the study of neurodegeneration.
In this week-long workshop we will have lectures from renowned faculty from Harvard Medical School and from Portuguese Research Institutes. These talks will be followed by critical discussions chaired by students, and co-chaired by faculty members, to ensure successful discussions. In addition, the participants will present and discuss their own most recent work in the form of poster presentation. Noteworthy, throughout this workshop there will be lectures dedicated to funding, and participants will be asked to work in groups of 3-5 students in order to write short (2-3 pages) fictive Grant Applications. One of the hallmarks of the course will be a competition for the three most creative, but scientifically sound, proposal on an assigned topic to be announced at the beginning of the workshop.
Participants interested in participating in the workshop are asked to submit a letter detailing why they are interested in attending the workshop as well as a brief description of their research experience and a CV. Please submit all materials in English to: Sandra_Oliveira@hms.harvard.edu
