Workshop
Visualizing Molecular & Cellular Processes with 3D Animation, IPATIMUP Porto, 19 - 23 June 2010
Coordinators
Janet Iwasa, PhD, Harvard Medical School
Filipe Santos Silva, PhD, IPATIMUP, Porto
Dates: 19th to 23rd June 2010
Location: IPATIMUP, PORTO
Description
Visual representations of biological processes are essential for effective scientific communication and teaching. As we gain a deeper understanding of the complexity and dynamics of molecular and cellular mechanisms, our need for sophisticated tools to visualize molecules, cells and tissues has increased dramatically. 3D animation has emerged as a powerful technique to synthesize diverse structural, dynamic and locational data culled from numerous studies, and can play a key role in communicating scientific findings at all levels of biological education, including communication to the public.
Goals
The short-term goal of this workshop is to give participants hands-on training in 3D animation software, namely Autodesk Maya. During the course, the participants will design and complete short scientific animation on a subject of their choosing. In the long-term we expect that participants will return to their home institutions armed with a new tool to visualize biological processes and aid them to more effectively communicate and explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms that they study.
Workshop Outline
The workshop duration will be 5 days, with each day broken up into morning, afternoon and evening sessions. The morning session will generally consist of lectures on theory and animation techniques, while the afternoon session will consist of a hands-on, self-guided 3D animation tutorial. In the early evening, participants will be expected to work on personal animation projects on a scientific topic of their choosing.
Participants
Graduate students, postdocs and faculty from institutions across Portugal are invited to apply to this workshop. This workshop is free of charge. Participation is limited to 15, with preference given to applicants who demonstrate a keen interest in scientific visualization outreach and education and a pre-existing ability in computer graphics, illustration, or art. Participants will be expected to bring their own laptop computers (running Windows or Mac OS X) and will be provided a copy of Autodesk Maya and Adobe After Effects to use during the workshop and to keep afterwards.
Registration Deadline: Friday, 7 May 2010
Please complete a one-page essay describing your interest in animation and list any previous experience with computer graphics, illustration and/or art. Please note that prior experience is NOT REQUIRED for participation.
Essays and contact information should be emailed to the Harvard Medical School-Portugal Program Manager Sandra Oliveira at Sandra_Oliveira@hms.harvard.edu
