Workshop
Novel Experimental Therapies for Diseases of the Nervous System, 29 and 30 May 2010, Lisbon
Coordinators
Xandra O. Breakefield, PhD, Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School
Maria João Saraiva, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry, Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Porto
Miguel Sena-Esteves, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurology, University of Massachusetts Medical Center
Dates: Saturday, 29 and Sunday 30 May 2010
Location: Hotel Pestana Palace, Lisbon
Deadline for Registration: Monday 3 May 2010
Description
This two day course will focus on new therapeutic approaches for diseases of the nervous system and on issues related to translation into clinical trials. Neurologic diseases have proven to be an important arena for exploring novel therapeutic interventions. New methods will include examples which span:
1) The use of small inhibitory RNAs (siRNAs) antibodies to ameliorate neurodegenerative conditions;
2) Gene replacement using “benign” virus vectors, delivery of neurotrophic factors, antiapoptosis proteins, protective proteins; and
3) chemokines, oncolytic virus vectors and homing cells expressing cytotoxic proteins for brain tumors.
These methods apply to a wide range of neurologic and other medical conditions but will be illustrated using specific diseases in the professor’s areas of expertise, including hereditary conditions – familial amyloid polyneuropathy, lysosomal storage diseases and torsion dystonia, and predominantly sporadic conditions – glioblastoma and Alzheimer’s disease.
Guest lecturers will include Luis Almeida and Cristina Rego from the University of Coimbra.
Ample time will be given for interactive discussion of challenges to implementing novel therapies, including regulatory issues, risk-benefit ratios, consent forms, epidemiologic considerations and partial disease correction scenarios.
The course is open and free of charge to all members of the Harvard Medical School – Portugal Program community (students, PhD fellows and Doctors, Faculty) and also available for members not directly associated with the Program who are interested in the topic.
All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
Participants interested in attending the workshop are asked to submit their resume (CV) to Sandra Oliveira at Sandra_Oliveira@hms.harvard.edu. Participants should demonstrate work or study in an area that is complementary to course subject.
